What is it about ?
Often called blue algae or blue-green algae, spirulina is a microscopic cyanobacterium rich in plant proteins, minerals and vitamins. Its name comes from its spiral shape. Used as a food supplement, this microalgae is easily assimilated by the body and very low in calories. The spirulina powder sold here comes from several species such as arthrospira platensis or arthrospira maxima, cultivated in Laos. Well known for its nutritional qualities, spirulina is recognized as being of public utility by WHO and many NGOs encourage the cultivation and consumption of this algae to fight against malnutrition.
How to use spirulina powder in cooking ?
Spirulina powder has a powerful seaweed taste that is neither sweet, nor salty, nor bitter. It mixes with any type of liquid such as fruit juices, vegetable juices, smoothies, cold sauces, cold soups, yoghurts … Its nutritional value decreases with heat, it is advisable to avoid heating it or mix it in hot preparations. Spirulina powder can also be sprinkled on salads, raw vegetables or even in pudding. To benefit from all the virtues of spirulina, it is not recommended to mix it with hot drinks, especially tea and coffee, which can reduce the absorption of iron and calcium it contains by up to 60%.
